Dixie | Cockapoo | Bakersfield, CA
Hello everyone, Please welcome our newest member to the OLK9 family! Dixi is an adorable five month old Cocker spaniel and Poodle crossbreed, who is here with us for our three week premium puppy board and train program. Dixi’s owner has let us know that some of the things that she struggles with include, playfully biting her owners hands, jumping on strangers, pulling on the leash and being too rough with her cats. Over the next three weeks Dixie will be learning basic obedience commands, how to properly walk on the leash and also potty training. Stay tuned to our website if you are interested in viewing Dixi’s daily progress.

Dixi is doing such a great job so far on her board and train journey! In the beginning she was very shy and timid to trust me, but over time she began to come out of her shell and prove how smart she really is. Today Dixi focused on completing the come to sit command in which she successfully mastered.

As part of todays daily training we took Dixi on a fun trip to Patriots park. Dixi is a master at all of her commands now, so today we mainly focused on confidence building and working past various distractions. This morning as I took Dixi out to potty I noticed something in her stool that looked like grains of white rice. These tiny organisms are what is commonly known as Dipylidium caninum, or Tape worm. Tape worm is a zoonotic parasite that can be contracted from close contact with dogs or fleas. It takes about three full weeks for Tape worms to grow to its fullest potential inside of the intestines. After three weeks they start to break of into segments which can live on their own and show up in stool samples. We will provide Dixi with some over the counter deworming medication to help her fight against those nasty parasites.

Today Dixie’s performance proved that she is really starting to become very familiar with our daily training routine! So far in Dixi’s board and train program, she has made major progress at maintaining focus around more and more distracting settings. Although she is getting better at holding extended commands, Dixi is still struggling to stay relaxed while holding them when other dogs are playing nearby. Staying still while there is a lot of things going on around them is a very common thing for puppies to struggle with, but today have noticed great progress in Dixi’s impulse control.
