Ria | German Shepherd | Oxnard, California
My name is Ria the German Shepherd and I am currently nine months old. My owners are putting me through a two week board and train program where I will be able to touch up on my basic commands. On my free time I love to play ball, and chase the frisbee with my dad! I also love joining my mom on jogs at the park. I do lack leash manners, on walks I pull my owners everywhere. I love interacting with great humans and other dogs! Over the next two weeks I will be able to improve my manners, improve my obedience, and become a well balanced dog for my family back home. Check daily to see my PAWSITIVE transformation!

Training Summary: Today we took our training to Northridge Park where we began to reintroduce the five basic commands to Ria. Using only leash pressure, we got her to complete multiples reps of each command as an introduction. She tends to get easily distracted by her environment. I noticed she won’t bark in public but can be really fixated on objects in her surroundings. Ria is settling in comfortably, she is eating all her meals and is drinking water regularly. It was a great first day of training, lets keep up the hard work Ria!

Training Summary: Today we continued to reinforce all commands. Adding some challenges by having her extend both her sit and down commands. She has the habit of holding a sit for five seconds and breaking command. We will continue to extend her commands. She is improving a lot on her heel command. She is understanding she must remain on my left side and should follow me wherever I go. When she’s doing well I reward her to build confidence performing the commands. Great work Girl!

Training Summary: Ria is a super smart girl when it comes to her commands. She is improving on her heel in lots of ways. She is understanding that she must follow and wait for me instead of always trying to rush through things herself. She has learned to extend her sit and down command for longer periods of time. She loves the place cot. Place command is great for her confidence because she is up on objects that are elevated from the floor. I did have her meet the pack today. She was very submissive and playful with the bigger dogs. Once she seen my smaller dog she did begin to bark, and her demeanor was too rough to let her play with small dogs. GREAT IMPROVEMENTS RIA, KEEP UP THE HARD WORK!

Training Summary: It was a really rainy day so we took our training indoors to the mall. She was really nervous in such a new environment. Even walking on the tile was strange for her. She tends to get fixated on certain people when in public. As we worked through the nervousness I noticed her tail wasn’t as tucked in and she was less protective. She’s improved a lot, extending her sit and down commands. It’s always tough the first time around, I believe she will build much more confidence in the upcoming days and will be ready for another trip to the mall!

Training Summary: Today we took our training to Lowe’s. We continue to reinforce all commands. It was another new environment with many new noises. She was spooked out by the noises of the forklifts, along with the carts. We were able to work through the nervousness. She killed the place command today! Keep up the great work Ria!

Training Summary: At the beginning she always starts off very anxious and nervous because of the new environment. Once we are able to work through that mental block, our walks are much more smooth. It’s important to always follow through with all the commands, even if she’s nervous. She loves to interact with her distractions. When she’s on command I tell her “good sit” / “good down” / “good Ria” to remind her she’s doing a great job and to keep her engaged with me rather than the distractions around.

Training Summary: Ria is performing all of her commands on leash. If she gets distracted I do guide into a command. In public she still can get fixated on certain objects. Today she was reactive with a biker and did lunge at them. We will continue to socialize her to objects in motion like bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc.

Training Summary: Ria is doing a much better job with her sit and down command. On the down command she is more relaxed and comfortable being in that position. Before she was tense laying on all fours, now she chooses to lay on a hip. Ria is learning to control her temperament. She is understanding that there is a time and place for a certain behavior. I can say “break” and praise her, then go back onto a controlled heel. We continue to safely work on her recall when off leash, on my property. WOO HOOO WAY TO GO Ria!

Training Summary: Ria handled herself much better around dogs and people today. She portrayed a lot of confidence when around people. Unlike the very first day she was very nervous and skittish like. Today her tail was out and was engaged in the training! She can still be fixated on dogs in her environment. It’s important to continue reinforcing the commands, especially around the distraction. When the distraction is around I guide her into a command to regroup her attention back to me.

Training Summary: Ria has really improved and it showed today at Home Depot! She now isn’t afraid of the moving shopping carts and has gained the confidence to be around them. The shopping carts isn’t the big deal, the big deal is her overcoming the fear of the movement & sounds projected from the cart. She can now walk through the store not so fearful. She’s so fun to go shopping with! Keep up the great work girl!
