Cosmo's Story: A Border Collie Who Finally Settles in Public

Where Cosmo started

Cosmo is a Border Collie, and Border Collies are the smartest dogs most people will ever own. That is not always the advantage it sounds like. A brain that fast, with nothing to do, will find something to do.

His owner's description of his behavior out in public was blunt, and familiar to anyone who has owned one. She compared it to a severe case of ADHD. Not aggressive. Just completely unable to settle anywhere interesting, which is everywhere.

A dog like that ends up staying home, which is the worst possible outcome for a Border Collie.

The training journey

Our trainers worked with Cosmo, and, as his owner noted, with the family too: "The trainers at Off Leash K9 worked with Cosmo and us."

The work with a dog like this is about giving the brain a job. A Border Collie who has been asked to hold a position, and knows exactly what holding it means, is not fighting his own head anymore. Focus is the thing you are actually training. Manners are what focus looks like from the outside.

It is proofed where it counts, in public, around movement and noise and other people, because a dog who can do it in a quiet room has not learned anything useful yet.

• He is confident. His owner's first word for the after picture.
• He is mannerly. Out in the world, not just at home.
• He is focused when out and about in society. Quoting her exactly, because that phrase is the whole job.
• He can sit politely in public. She photographed it, and added, "something that could not have been possible just a few weeks ago!"

What it changed at home

The family got their dog's world back. A Border Collie who can hold himself together in public is a Border Collie who gets to go places, meet things, and use the brain that was causing all the trouble in the first place.

His owner called the result "nothing short of miraculous." It was not a miracle. It was a few weeks of clear, consistent work, which is a much more encouraging thing to hear if you own a dog like Cosmo.

Why Cosmo's story matters to us

High-drive breeds fill up rescues, and it is almost never because they are bad dogs. It is because nobody gave them a job, and an unemployed working dog is a difficult animal to live with.
