While he’s the sweetest pup when calm, Jack struggles to control his excitement, especially when he gets overstimulated, which can land him in a bit of trouble. He’s even been known to lovingly “clean up” his owners and human siblings during these bursts of energy. His family affectionately compares him to a Sour Patch candy—sweet one moment, a little rough the next. Today, Jack had the opportunity to train with my dog, Danté, a spirited Belgian Malinois. The two bonded quickly, establishing a strong connection right from the start. Their session focused on teaching Jack to be proactive around other dogs, shifting his mindset from purely engaging in play to collaborating with them to accomplish tasks. It was an excellent step forward in building teamwork and focus between the two.

Today, we took our training session to Lowe’s, where Jack was exposed to a variety of new distractions. Being a social dog who loves people, Jack was especially drawn to the many customers and employees around the store. We focused on teaching him how to remain calm and composed around humans without feeling the need to greet every person he encountered. For his first time practicing in such a busy environment, he did remarkably well. Jack continues to make great progress with his leash manners and overall command obedience, showing how much he’s learning and improving with each session.
