Cubby | Mixed Breed | Bakersfield, California

Meet Cubby, an affectionate and energetic mixed breed who is just eight months old. He will be joining us for our two-week board and train program alongside his brother, Jax, the giant Labradoodle. Cubby has a remarkable rescue story—he was abandoned in the deserts of Bakersfield before being taken in by a loving family who now wants the very best for him. While he is friendly and social, he struggles with walking on a leash and becomes overly excited when he sees other dogs, often lunging out of enthusiasm. Although he gets along well with other dogs, his high energy can make him difficult to control in certain situations. Throughout his training, we will focus on improving his leash manners, impulse control, and overall obedience. Stay tuned to witness his amazing transformation!

Today, we focused on reinforcing commands to build consistency and reliability in Cubby’s training. He is making great progress, especially on the leash, showing much better control overall. However, he can still get overly excited at times, which is something we continue to work on. To help him develop a calmer mindset, we are practicing extended sits and downs, encouraging him to maintain composure even in stimulating environments. With continued practice and patience, he is learning to channel his energy in a more controlled and focused way.

Cubby has made significant progress in his training, showing noticeable improvement in both obedience and leash manners. He is now consistently responding to the “down” command and walking much better on the leash, demonstrating greater control and focus. With this solid foundation in place, the next step is to introduce distractions to further strengthen his ability to remain calm and responsive in more challenging environments. By gradually increasing the level of difficulty, Cubby will continue to build confidence and reliability, ensuring he can maintain good behavior regardless of the situation.

Training Highlights:

Cubby and Jacks are doing exceptionally well around other dogs, displaying friendly and social behavior. While their natural inclination is to engage with other dogs, it’s important for them to understand that there is a time and place for interaction. Teaching them boundaries ensures they remain focused and well-behaved in various situations. For example, during designated playtime, they are free to socialize, but during structured walks, they must maintain focus and continue walking rather than expecting to greet every dog they pass. This approach helps reinforce good manners and prevents potential negative interactions, as not all dogs are friendly or open to socializing. By setting these expectations, Cubby and Jacks are learning to remain calm and responsive, regardless of the distractions around them.

Today, the boys had the chance to meet my dog, Danté, and it was a fantastic experience for all of them. They immediately hit it off, playing together with so much energy and enthusiasm. It was great to see how naturally they interacted, but beyond just letting them play, I focused on teaching them how to work together as a group. Encouraging them to stay calm around one another was an important part of the process, helping them understand that balanced energy is just as valuable as playtime. Watching them learn and adjust to each other’s presence was incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to see how their bond continues to grow.
