Board and train

Your dog boards with one of our professional trainers and trains every day, then you get a one-on-one handoff session at pickup. The two-week programs include free lifetime refresher lessons. For aggression and reactivity there is a separate 4 to 6 Week Board and Train for Aggression, which runs $4,500 to $6,000 depending on the dog; call us to talk it through.

1 Week Board and Train

One week built around off-leash recall, place, sit, and door, greeting and meal manners, plus a 1.5-hour handoff session. E-collar included. It is usually booked a couple of months ahead, so please call before paying online.

2 Week Board and Train: Community K9

$2,800

Two weeks with everyday distractions such as parks, trails, neighborhoods and big box stores: sit, down, place, off-leash heel, off, and off-leash recall, plus door, greeting and meal manners and a 2-hour handoff session. E-collar included.

2 Week Board and Train: Urban K9

$2,800

Two weeks for dogs that live in or near busy cities, trained around high-level distractions such as busy events, shopping centers, airports and train stations: sit, down, place, on-leash heel, off, and off-leash recall, plus manners and a 2-hour handoff session. E-collar included.

Private lessons

One-on-one lessons where a trainer coaches you and your dog together, at our Olive Drive facility by appointment.

Basic Obedience

Private lessons covering come, sit, down and place (each with an extended hold), loose-leash heel, and off. E-collar and training leash included.

Basic Marker Mastery

Five 1-hour sessions of reward-based training: an introduction to come and sit, the place command, and loose-leash walking on a slip lead. A 15-foot leash, clicker and slip lead are included.

AKC Canine Good Citizen

Seven obedience lessons that prepare you and your dog for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. We are certified CGC evaluators. The certificate itself is issued by the American Kennel Club for a separate $200.

Rattlesnake avoidance

Teaches your dog to recognize a rattlesnake and move away from it rather than investigate it.

Snake Avoidance Foundations Program

An initial snake avoidance conditioning session, a follow-up proofing session, and e-collar education for you. Your dog must already have a Mini Educator e-collar (ET-300, ET-1200 or Micro Educator).

Snake Avoidance Foundations Program + Mini Educator Package

The same program with a Mini Educator e-collar included, fitted and set up for your dog. An optional yearly refresher session is available for $75.

Puppies

Puppies can start training at twelve weeks, once they have had two sets of vaccines. E-collar training starts at five months; younger puppies train with the marker and treat method instead, through Puppy Fundamentals & Obedience or Basic Marker Mastery. Call us and we will tell you what fits your puppy's age.

What every board and train includes

Frequently misunderstood facts

Board and train and private lessons are different. In board and train, your dog stays and trains with our trainer. In private lessons, you and your dog train together with a trainer coaching you.
Training happens at our facility, not in your home. Lessons and board and train run from our Olive Drive facility in Bakersfield, by appointment.
Aggression work is its own program. The 4 to 6 Week Board and Train for Aggression is built for aggression and reactivity. Nobody can promise a complete fix for dog or people aggression; we give you control and help you manage it.
E-collar training starts at five months. Younger puppies can still start training at twelve weeks with the marker and treat method.
Distance is not a deal breaker. Families in Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley usually choose board and train: one drive to drop off and one to pick up, with a handoff session at the end.
Packages are paid before training is scheduled. After payment, we contact you to set your training dates.

Our team

Jesse Medina. Owner and trainer. He was hired full-time at Cesar Millan's Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita in 2013, where he taught socialization, basic obedience, search and rescue, and sheep herding classes, and he volunteered with Marley's Mutts Pawsitive Change, a program that pairs shelter dogs with inmates in California state prisons.
Aileen Medina. Head trainer. She has worked with and helped train dogs since she was about 14, worked at Dioji Dog Resort for more than a year, and trained with Nick White, founder of Off Leash K9 Training.
Anthony Rivera. Trainer. He started as a shelter volunteer, trained under Jesse Medina, and completed Off Leash K9 Training's seventeen-day immersive trainer program.
Miguel Napoles. Trainer. Before training dogs he worked helping people experiencing homelessness, including finding new homes for their dogs, and he learned dog training under Jesse Medina.

Good to know

Consultations are free, by phone or as a virtual consultation.
Payment plans are available.
All training packages are paid in full before lessons are scheduled. Credit card purchases carry a 3.99% transaction fee.
We train with an e-collar at a low level, closer to a phone on vibrate than anything painful, and never as punishment. At your first session we put it on your own arm so you can feel it.
E-collar training works on dogs of any size and breed once they are five months old.
