Training Highlights:
Buddy is such a big goofball, always full of energy and personality, which makes training both fun and a little challenging. Lately, we’ve been introducing leash pressure through the “here” command to start building a solid foundation for recall. This is his first real introduction to coming when called, and while he still gets distracted by the world around him, he’s starting to make the connection. Teaching recall isn’t just about the command—it’s about helping him understand that leash pressure means move toward me, and that coming back is always a positive thing. With consistent practice, Buddy is beginning to respond better, and it’s exciting to see those first lightbulb moments.

Training Highlights:
Buddy is in the early stages of learning the fundamentals, and while he’s making progress, his high energy is still very present. To help him become a more well-rounded dog, we’re focusing not just on obedience, but also on practicing calm energy throughout the day. That means incorporating moments of stillness, structured downtime, and rewarding him when he settles on his own. Teaching a young, energetic dog like Buddy to turn off that “go-go-go” switch is just as important as teaching commands—it’s what creates balance and makes training stick long-term.

We’ve been continuing to freeshape commands with Buddy, and he’s responding really well. His strong food motivation makes him a great candidate for this kind of learning, where we can reward the behaviors we want as they naturally unfold. By using what he loves most—treats—we’re able to effectively guide him toward the commands and responses we’re aiming for. It’s all about capturing those little moments of success and building on them. Great work, Buddy—you’re picking it up fast!

We’ve started introducing the “place” command to Buddy, and he’s picking it up quickly—no surprise, since he’s such a fast learner. This command is great for teaching him to settle in one designated, comfy spot like his dog bed, especially when we need him to stay put and out of the way. Whether it’s during dinner, when guests arrive, or just to promote calmness around the house, “place” gives him a clear job to do while reinforcing structure and self-control.

I took Buddy to Lowe’s today as part of his training in a real-world environment. He absolutely loves people and naturally gets excited when he sees someone new. While it’s great that he’s so social, today’s focus was on teaching him that he doesn’t need to greet every single person we pass. We’re working on reinforcing calm behavior around distractions and helping him understand that just because people are nearby doesn’t mean it’s time to say hello. This kind of exposure is essential in building impulse control and helping Buddy become a well-mannered dog in public spaces.

During today’s training session at Lowe’s, we focused on tightening up his “down” command, which he’s still working on with a bit of guidance. His recall continues to be solid, even in a busy public setting, and he remains calm and friendly around people. On top of all that, he had no potty accidents in the store—a huge win in his continued development. Way to go, Buddy!
